Filmmaking Competition Seeks Entrants

01/05/2007

The Fischgaard Short Film Project, a filmmaking competition, is returning to South Dakota January 19 through 21. The Fischgaard Short Film Project was created in Aberdeen, SD and has had filmmakers from three states competing.

The Fischgaard Short Film Project’s mission is to motivate independent filmmakers and to enhance film as art in South Dakota. During the competition, filmmaking teams create a movie – writing, shooting and editing a four to seven minute film – all in one weekend. It is open to professionals and amateurs alike. The films are adjudicated and awards are handed out following the public viewing.

“The Fischgaard Short Film Project is a chance for young filmmakers to add to their portfolio and for first-time filmmakers to gain valuable experience,” said Tom Black, organizer of the Aberdeen event. “Regardless of their skill level, the competition is a unique experience for filmmakers.”

The Aberdeen competition kicks off January 19, as teams draw their film’s genre. At the same time, they receive a character, prop and line of dialogue that must appear in the film. Teams then race to create their film in 48 hours. On Sunday January 21, audiences will have a chance to see the finished work on the big screen at Aberdeen’s historic Capitol Theater at 6:30p.m., $5 admission at the door.

“This competition is a unique and challenging experience for filmmakers,” said Matt Klundt of Aberdeen Film Society. “Filmmakers have a chance to show off their skills, and add valuable stock to their portfolio.”

Registration is limited to 12 teams and entrants are accepted on a first come first serve basis.  Registration began on December 4th at 10:00 AM at the Aberdeen Community Theatre office, 417 S. Main Aberdeen, SD 57401. Visit fischgaard.com or call (605) 225-2228 for more information and registration forms.

The Aberdeen Film Society is part of the Aberdeen Community Theater and is helping to return film to the silver screen at the Capitol Theater.

Adding to mattfox's comment, Fischgaard is also "extreme" filmmaking, especially if you draw a genre that requires shooting outside. Now. In South Dakota. ;)

And I completely agree with the Carmike comment. Our local cinema has gone from mundane to ridiculous. Just check out this link on our very Aberdeen American News website: http://www.aberdeennews.com/mld/aberdeennews/news/local/16469808.htm

This competition is a unique and challenging experience for filmmakers. Filmmakers have a chance to showoff their skills, and add valuable stock to their portfolio. If you've got any inclination, sign up!

Also, be sure to come to the viewing, it's cheaper than Carmike and less predictable.
