IF YOU ARE A CARING, compassionate Aberdeen resident, (and we think you are) who wants to volunteer your time to help other people in this area, where would you start? You might call the first organization that comes to mind and ask if help is needed. But enlightened readers of A-List magazine can find out about volunteer opportunities in the Aberdeen area by checking out our Community Service guide, or by contacting Volunteer Service Clearinghouse.
The Volunteer Service Clearinghouse connects volunteers of all ages with service opportunities in the Aberdeen area. VSC also collaborates with community-based organizations to coordinate service and service-learning projects that address specific needs in our community. The Clearinghouse provides opportunities outside Aberdeen as well, such as Alternative Spring Break, which recently won Outstanding Community Service Project of the Year from Northern State University.
Over 30 service organizations in Aberdeen and other communities are registered with VSC, including: - Aberdeen Community Theatre - Aberdeen Area Habitat for Humanity - Safe Harbor - Sioux Council - The Salvation Army - United Blood Services - YAPAtorium Youth Center
The Clearinghouse is governed by a board of area high school and college students, who assess community needs and resources, create service projects, raise funds and stimulate community involvement. VSC is sponsored by the United Way and the City of Aberdeen, as well as by grants from other businesses and organizations. Northern State University provides office space and equipment at no cost.
