Stylish for the Season

SLEIGH BELLS, CASH REGISTERS, AND CELL PHONE RING TONES continue to greet us with reminders of the holiday season that surrounds us. As we gift, receive, and hustle in the New Year, there is one item that is on everyone’s wish list: The down vest.

Down vests originally started making a scene on the bunny trails of your friendly neighborhood ski resort, or favorite snow drift. They come in handy when snowboarding or skiing and you don’t desire to have a lot of bulky layers on. They keep your core warm and allow for endless mobility which is most important when flying down the side of a hill of snow. Likewise, for today’s fashion conscious reader, they are a functional item that offers a new twist to a back hills favorite. The down vest is able to be worn under and over everything. For the residents of hoodie-ville, instead of putting a bulky parka on top of our favorite seasonless hooded sweatshirt, it can be layered up with a down vest for warmth and style.

Down vests aren’t necessarily all filled with down. If you do have a little extra coin in your pocket, down vests by The North Face, Tommy, or Columbia might be in your range. But for most, if you stop by any of your local specialty stores you will be able to find a variety of vests in styles and colors right around $39. Styles may include those that are hooded or not, have fur trim around the collar, cropped, in store-exclusive colors, and/or more classic without a lot of bells and whistles about them.

This is one trend that is being eaten up by both men and women. And the layering options are transgender also. A vest can be paired with a screen tee and a thermal layer up, or for a more dressed up look, a button down shirt and lacy tank. They can be layered under overcoats in the deadest parts of the winter for extra warmth or like before, worn as the primary piece for warmth. A vest can also be layered over a favorite sweater and worn with denim or casual pants. A vest look is not complete without the perfect warm wear gear: Stylish scarves, hats and mittens. Mittens are coming in to kick traditional gloves out of the way. All of these things will keep you cozy when the weather outside is frightful. Vests make the way for a look that is casual but trendy at the same time.

Skip into the New Year knowing your fashion sensibility is on track because you read it here in A-List.
