THE SECOND ANNUAL BATTLE OF THE TWO DAY BANDS went down in February at the Red Rooster Coffee Housed downtown Aberdeen. Amateur and seasoned musicians came together with hopes of winning a swanky trophy and bragging rights at the premiering concert Sunday, Feb. 25. At the Friday night kick off, names of participants were put into a bucket and chosen at random to fill four teams (“bands”). After the teams were created, they then chose an object at random that helped them name their band (ex. an action figure), and an unmarked CD that contained a cover song that the band must perform (ex. Culture Club’s “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me”). On top of those requirements, two words were chosen at random (discotheque, and Dumpy) for all bands to incorporate into their set.
This was not an easy task for any musician. Writing music takes a lot of time and, unfortunately with this competition, it truly is the luck of the draw when it comes to who your band mates are going to be. It doesn’t seem fair, but it really does come down to heart, determination, and a lot of hard work.
By the time the musicians come back together at the show on Sunday afternoon they must be prepared to perform in front of a large crowd and three intimidating judges. Pop’s of the Pops Blue Rhythm Band, Pete Burckhart, Aberdeen Musician-Ron Parker, and NSU Music teacher, Fred Hemke served as the 2007 judges. While seven bands completed the competition, only three went home with awards. What a great experience for inspired and aspiring musicians!
