This is a great way to burn up an afternoon. You must have a slight taste for architecture and his- tory to appreciate this excursion, and if not, do it anyway; maybe you’ll develop an appetite for historic downtowns.
1. GET A BROCHURE Pick up a “Downtown Aberdeen Historic Walking Tour” brochure at one of the following places. • Chamber of Commerce 516 S. Main St. • McQuillen Design Associates 9 Fifth Avenue SE • Aberdeen Downtown Association 224 S. Main (2nd floor) • Dacotah Prairie Museum 21 S. Main St. • Conventions and Visitors Bureau 10 Railroad Ave. SW. Or call A-List Magazine and we’ll send you one 605-226-3481.
2. GET THERE Park your car beside the Dacotah Prairie Museum located at 21 S. Main Street. You access the lot towards the back of the museum (off Market Street). Parking on Main Street and sides streets is two hours; designed for shoppers. Park there if your time is limited to two hours.
3. START WALKING This location puts you at the start of the walking tour. The museum is on page three of the brochure. Please note that the brochure has not been updated and two of the three buildings on page two have been demolished.
4. START TOURING While standing in the museum parking lot, detour just a bit north (toward the Flame restaurant). Looking north towards the railroad tracks you’ll see the Milwaukee train depot which leads off the brochure on page two.
5. KEEP WALKING From there, walk up one side of Main Street then back down the other side on you your way back. If you have time, walk at least up to the alleys on the side streets, further if you want. Enjoy the lovely pedestrian resting points along the way.
6.NOTE ARCHITECTURE Be sure to look up. Most of Aberdeen downtown’s unique architecture is above street level. Notice intricate brick work, moldings, gargoyles and unique windows.
7. SHOP Of course you’re free to eat and shop all along the way. When you pick up the walking tour brochure, also pick up a downtown directory featuring all the places to eat and shop downtown. Pop your head into a few businesses to check out original tin ceilings. There’s not many, but a few nicely restored ones.
8. PIGEON ALERT Watch out for pigeons! Everyone hates them, but they are sort of a downtown icon. Please don’t feed them , however.
